Pure whale excitement can only describe last night’s whale encounter, or as the engineer put it “dinner and a show”. We had 2 adult humpbacks and a little one surfacing around the ship for approximately an hour with the sun setting over Buckle Island in distance that was topped with a lenticular type cloud as a back drop. It was a stunning and uplifting experience for all those on board and another tag deployed and biopsy taken from a scientific perspective. Our next destination is Scott Island which is due east of the Balleny Islands. This is the general trend of the satellite tracks from the whales tagged around the Balleny Islands. Currently, Remora is on the water working another humpback whale but the overall conditions are challenging for the scientific RIB crews with temperatures slowly dropping and a consistent short choppy swell with moderate to fresh winds. Seabirds species sighted is still at 45 but hopefully this will increase around Scott Island and last night we also deployed the krill hoop net to catch come krill.
