Comments

We continued NW'ly with both the weather and sea ice conditions improving until we finally hit open water late yesterday. We came across a 'sleepy' humpback in the afternoon in amongst some small bits of sea ice, launched Remora and the scientific team. The team successfully deployed a satellite tag, took a biopsy and photographs of the whale and the scientific process. We passed back through the 180 degree meridian and are heading towards the Balleny Islands. The scientific team are now focusing on humpback whales with the future areas of work being based on historical catch data and more recent sighting surveys from research vessels. We have made preparations for work today and are hoping to encounter more whales soon. Regards Hully, Sarah and Nick
