Yesterday we encountered over 50 pods of minke whales but wind, sea state
conditions and the proximity of the whales to the pack ice made working the
whales impossible. The wind did ease in the evening and Remora was launched
in pursuit of a pod of minke whales but to no avail with bad light stopping
operations around 8:30pm ship time. Due to being close to the pack ice, we
have encountered crabeater seals, Adelie penguins and lots of seabirds
including a feeding group of Giant Petrels, with the number of sea bird
species observed still being 42. The weather forecast for today and the next
couple of days is good in terms of wind strength and we made preparations
for launching the RIBs before breakfast in anticipation for scientific
operations today, but the whales have been a little thin. Hopefully, all the
variables (wind, sea state but mainly the whales today) line up and we can
'work' the whales as the day progresses. Regards Hully, Sarah and Nick
