The highlight was the caramel crusted rhubarb and apple crumble pie for dessert at lunch yesterday but more importantly in the afternoon the highlights kept coming. Remora and Beluga (RIBs) were launched in earnest with Remora working 2 humpback whales and managing to deploy a satellite tag and take a biopsy from one the whales. Photographs of the whale flukes (their tails) and dorsal fins were taken of both whales for comparison with the humpback database (a library of photographs of tail flukes and dorsal fins for identification purposes). Beluga was launched for a full ‘shake down’ of their scientific procedures in preparation for future scientific work as well as supporting Remora in a Search and Rescue capacity. The sun was shining, with an emperor penguin being sighted as well as Wilson Storm Petrel, taking the seabird species count to 40 for the voyage. An amazing sunset with ice bergs in the foreground ended a grand day in the Ross Sea.
