Comments

Our new heading is 71S 167W and the survey plan is to do a zig zag track while generally heading West. Whale sightings have been a little scarce of late with weather conditions improving to lift the fog off the ocean which will assist with observations, both whale and seabird. Last night after tea, the Tangaroa went into closing mode on a ‘whale of interest’ to see if it was worth working, but it was a single whale moving fast. Nevertheless, it was a good test of that part of our operations. Life on board is becoming quite settled and most expeditioners have developed their routines for the day and everyone on aboard is eagerly awaiting that first RIB launch and beginning scientific work from the RIBs. Our acoustic program is well underway and the deploying of sono-buoys to listen to whales continues as required.
