Comments

Our new target or waypoint is 72S 150W, which should be approximately the northern boundary of the sea ice which we plan to follow west. This morning the bridge was hype of activity with pods of humpbacks, fin and minke whales being sighted and the acoustic system detecting blue whales ‘singing’. On the sea bird front, a total of 37 species have been identified with Antarctic petrels, giant petrels, light mantled sooty albatross, Antarctic fulmars and mottled petrels (which only breed in the NZ sub-antarctic islands) being spotted. A surface swarm of krill was also spotted and the CPR was retrieved for the final time. Icebergs now are passed regularly and the view from the mess windows at meal times are alive with icebergs and whale spouts. In terms of RIB deployment and scientific operations, wind strength is still preventing operations but we wait patiently for improving conditions. Finally, for the kiddies who have Mums and Dads aboard the ship, a big “hi”. Please note: Personal email communication to the ship is not working at the moment and hopefully it will be back on line very soon.
Regards Hully, Sarah and Nick
