We are approximately 190nm from 70S 150W (our intended waypoint or target) and then we will roughly track South West towards the ice edge. The ice edge currently sits at about 72 degrees South, and from where will head West. Activities on board of late have been scientific briefings for scientists and crew, the establishment of a structured whale observation roster and a full ‘shake down’ or preparation of the RIBs and scientific equipment. We are ready to start scientific work when the whales appear and the weather and sea conditions are suitable. To quote an expeditioner “we are in the starting blocks”. The general process is that whales are spotted, RIBs and scientific personnel are launched off the RV Tangaroa and scientific work on the whales begins. Sounds simple but we are really at the mercy of the weather and whales. Fingers crossed. Finally, the last run of the CPR (Continuous Plankton Recorder) is in the water with krill being caught recently.
