We departed Wellington at 2pm (NZ Local) yesterday, the 2nd of February
after a busy mobilisation period. We are heading for 70S 150W and then we
will make a decision on our track west from there. We deployed the
Continuos Plankton Recorder (CPR) approximately 1 hour after departing and
will deploy the CPR five times on our track SE’ly. We also began
collecting water samples last night. Seabird and whale observations began
pretty much straight away with lots of sea birds around but no whales to
date…..stop press 4 beaked whales just sighted. We had our first muster
exercise shortly after leaving port and seeing everyone at breakfast this
morning is an indication of how calm the seas are at the moment, touch
wood.
