Marine Science trials continuing with three long line shots completed to date and the team just about to commence trialling beam trawls.
Trials have been going well into the night with the shifts finishing around 2200 after the debrief and planning for the next days is complete. This means that a lot of people are working or in the rack getting some well earned sleep. Despite the long hours the results have been great so far with process and procedure constantly being refined to ensure that it all goes well on Voyage 2 in the waters off Antarctica.
The expeditioners who were on the ship solely for the Macquarie Island component of the voyage are finding new ways to keep themselves amused, from peeling spuds to washing dogs, its amazing what you can find to to on a 94m ice breaker. But Tasmania constantly tantalises us throughout the day, with the spectacular east coast constantly visible on the horizon during the daytime.
The Pest Eradication Project Team presented a video on the successful New Zealand project to free the sub-Antarctic Campbell Island of a plague of rats in 2001. Some of the processes highlight will be utilised to deal with the pest problems on Macquarie Island.
Mick D gave a warts and all expose of his life as a 'logistics guide' on Antarctic tourist vessels as part of the nightly series of presentations.
Sprunky is due to give his traditional 'Crop Circles' talk tonight and people have been warned to get there seats early as there is likely to be high demand for this particular presentation.
The weather seems to be favouring us at the moment, but clouds are starting to gather and it looks like we are in for some rain later on today, but this will have little impact on our operational activities, and:
Less than 48 hours to go! ETA Macquarie No. 3 Wharf Hobart, 0800hrs, Monday 26 October 2009.
Regards
Rob and Aaron.
