The winds continued to abate last night but the swell ensured that we had to continue to walk around the ship with a great deal of caution. All in all, the end result was a good night's rest for all of us aboard especially after the previous three nights of fighting to keep your mattress as well as yourself in your bunk.
Last night and this morning presentations were given about the marine science that is due to be conducted on Voyage 2 of this season, as well as the equipment that will be trialled over the coming days in support of that voyage. Pretty spectacular stuff and pushing technology to its limits in very extreme environments.
The sky was clear this morning and the sun has continued to beam down on us all day. The sea is calm and the winds have backed off to an acceptable 10knts, what more could you ask for! The dogs are having a relaxing afternoon on the heli deck with their trainer Steve, enjoying the sunshine on a stable deck for a change. Everyone else is out and about on the weather decks taking the opportunity for a dose of sunshine delivered vitamin D, with the appropriate SPF 30+ applied of course.
The Marine Science crew continue their preparations for the trials, with the first series of events to commence at 0600 tomorrow morning. On the first day of trials we will be testing camera equipped long line fishing gear.
This is part of a project to determine the effect that this type of fishing gear has on the sea bottom, as it comes to rest and as it is retrieved. This is due to continue throughout the day and well into the night.
A big happy birthday to the Aurora's Captain, Scott, who passes a significant milestone today, no not that one, the one before that one! All the best Scott!
It should also be noted that Jennie W has been up and about for the last three days and averaging three meals a day! For those that know Jennie that is nothing short of a miracle, especially with the conditions we have been having since we left Macquarie Island.
All aboard enjoying the much calmer conditions and the chance to get some undisturbed rest. With the earlier than scheduled start to marine trials our ETA alongside Macquarie 3 Wharf is now 8am Monday 26 October.
Regards, Rob and Aaron.
