The Aurora Australis arrived off Macquarie Island this morning at around 0600 and commenced anchoring in Buckles Bay. With two anchors down and the ship holding position in relatively light winds, preparations were begun in earnest to prep our LARCs and IRB, the backbone of the whole operation, for deployment.
The first IRB ashore retrieved the Macquarie Island Station Leader, Jason, along with the island's head ranger, Dave, to brief expeditioners on the special requirements for visiting Macquarie Island. Once the briefing was complete, the process of transferring 36 expeditioners, plus two dogs, ashore got underway. Cargo operations were also kicked off along with the initial setup of the refuelling system.
The light winds only remained with us for a little while as weather fronts passed across us almost hourly, bringing freshening winds, rain and sometimes snow. All of which made for an interesting period. The refuelling system is finally setup and we are about to start transferring fuel.
All aboard enjoying the change in pace and looking forward to getting the job done.
Regards
Rob and Aaron.
