Both the sunset last night and sunsrise this morning were
spectacular sights and have been well worth the 10 day wait. At the
moment the sun is beaming down on a calm Southern Ocean with a tad over
450 nautical miles to run until we are home in Hobart. There are a few
clouds around but not really detracting from this amazing day. This
weather is expected to remain with us for our run home, which is greatly
appreciated! The ship continues to make good speed and we still expect
to be all fast alongside Macquarie Wharf No 3 on Sunday morning at 0700.

On the Marine Science front, the action continues with another two Argos
being deployed overnight and the CPR being brought in and redeployed for
the last time. Only two more Argos to go!

Had some further information come in regarding the history of 'Stay' the
plastic canine currently in residence (captive) at Mawson. Field
Marshall Sprunk tapped into the omnipotent and vast ANARE intelligence
network and came up with the following from John W:

"(In 1992) A few of us were at the Taroona Tavern having a meal and a
few drinks - could have been Patrick, Pelham, Mark, Dave , Dave - the
Electronics Engineer and another one of the space boys.

It was a few weeks until the voyage departure and I was gathering stuff
to take to Davis.

The politics at the Division were focused on the dogs being removed from
Mawson - because they could introduce canine distemper to the seal
population.

Anyway, as we left the pub I saw the Guide Dog in the entrance way and
asked Mark if he could get one so we could "re-introduce" dogs to
Antarctica - and maybe raise a few bucks for the blind.

He approached the Blind Association and told them we would take the dog
south and raise some money for them and they agreed to loan us one. The
rest is history.

Stay had pups at Davis - a mythical one, Wrex - named after the
Division's Director.

Stay's first season in Antarctica was adventurous. Dog-napped to Mawson,
Stay featured in a series of the first electronically transmitted
coloured photos (jpegs) through a system Attila [Vrana]implemented -
including being forced to do Slushy duties, having a broken leg operated
on by Christine the Station Doctor, sitting in the incinerator, riding a
quad, sitting proudly beside the bust of Mawson. I sent these photos to
the ANARE Club for its archive collection a couple of years ago.

From John"

So the question about Stay's gender is now answered! Thanks Young Mans!
Have a fruit bun but make sure its soon (see below).

Ken was definitely on the offencive last night with a high explosive,
belt busting dessert titled 'Ken's Voodoo Jamaican Rum, Mocha and
chocolate mudbomb. This was so explosive a non-proliferation treaty is
being organised to ensure that this bad boy is never used again in any
conflict. The destruction was wide spread, devestating and did not spare
anyone, even the vegetarians! The judges sat down to this one like a
bomb disposal team tackling an improvised explosive device, spoons at
the ready. There was a lot riding on this one. Ken had gone to a large
amount of trouble and toil developing this uranium depleted tank buster.
Presentation alone was up there with the best and the judges were also
encouraged by the news that this was an original piece of culinary art,
conceived in the heat of battle, and made from completely fresh
ingredients - no resorting to packaged pudding mix or cans. It was
smiles all round from the judges with a truly breath taking performance,
but (insert pause here) the panel still has Kate's torte at number one -
despite Joe going going back for seconds on the mud bomb. It's the final
round tonight, thank god because I don't think we will be able to get
down the gangway on Sunday!

The other devastating news on the culinary front is that yesterday after
Muz and Jeremy passed on the info that today is the last day for fruit
buns! The mixture has finally run out, just as Jeremy had perfected the
recipe. Sad news indeed.

All aboard contemplating the remaining miles to Hobart and how time
seems to be slowing down all of sudden.

Regards

Rob, Simon and George.
