After a hectic port call, involving a large effort from a variety
of teams across the Antarctic Division, Voyage 3 of the 2009/10 Australian
Antarctic season set sail at 1707 yesterday with 41 Expeditioners and 20
crew aboard for the first leg to Davis station.
Amongst those embarked are teams from the Royal Australian Navy's
Hydrographic Office, Geosciences Australia, Bureau of Metrology, ARPANSA and
a variety of different research institutes. Rounding out the ship's
population is a large team of support personnel, a couple of Arts Fellowship
recipients and some expeditioners on their way to take up positions at Davis
and Mawson stations.
The weather has been kind to us since leaving Hobart, allowing for a
relatively comfortable night's sleep. But, as is so often the case, after
lunch the wind has swung around to be fine on our starboard bow, along with
the sea and swell, making for a more realistic 'Southern Ocean Experience'.
This has washed off about two knots of our speed over what we were achieving
through the night.
A very quiet ship at the moment, with some expeditioners in the process of
acquiring their sea legs, whilst others are getting themselves comfy for the
next ten to 12 days of the joys of the Southern Ocean.
A big thanks from the Voyage Management Team to the AAD's Supply Services
and Shipping Sections as well as the crew of the Aurora Australis for all
their efforts in getting us away on time yesterday. Well Done!
Regards
Rob, Simon and George.
