Did I say seven ‘bergs yesterday? I think I meant 70. Or maybe 170. It’s hard to say, I lost count. At one point the radar was crowded with bright bergy splotches, and everyone was up on deck, dresses for summer, photographing these amazing ‘bergs with waves crashing into them. We found a bigger ‘berg than that reported yesterday, at just over 5 km long, roughly wedge-shaped, and approximately 40 m high at its northern and southern extremities. As we travelled down it’s west-facing flank, hundreds of tonnes of ice came crashing into the ocean, creating a vast wall of spray and eliciting whoops of delight from the onlookers. All this in beautiful sunshine, and pleasant conditions, made for an amazing finale to our voyage. By evening, the ‘bergs had thinned out considerably, but there was still the occasional bergy-bit around, so our speed dropped back somewhat overnight, just in case we encountered an unexpected speed-bump.

This morning we had a pre-arrival briefing for our return to Hobart. We’re due in on Saturday 23 January with the vessel alongside Macquarie No. 4 wharf at 0700 hrs. Arrival information will be recorded on the AAD Transport Information Service for the information of family and friends. The number for this service is 1800 030 744. Nearly home!

Regards, Doug and Penny
