A delightful transit to the new site yesterday, with a few large pods of killer whales keeping us amused. Quite a few icebergs added to the visual feast, and thankfully none were in the way of where we wanted to run our beam trawl camera and sampling runs. Our first camera run turned up a bit of a surprise, when it hooked up on a discarded long line, complete with rock weights and hooks. It took a few hours to retrieve an estimated 2 km of line. Even though the area we are in is open to fishing, it was still an unexpected find. The marine science team then completed three sampling trawls at different depths, returning more biological samples for study. We’re now in transit once more to a new site 56 nm NNW of Drygalski Island, heading south to skirt around heavier pack ice to our west and north.
