Comments

We had much more good fortune last night and this morning with our choice of area, with open water conditions, and only a few icebergs in the vicinity. One long beam trawl with cameras was followed by several targeted sample trawls at depths of 500, 750 and 900 metres, with mixed success, but success none-the-less. Modifications to the trawl net gave it a higher probability of survival over rough ground, and even saw the capture of a sizeable boulder (a nicely smoothed glacial erratic which was released back into the wild) without too much net damage. The species count for the project now stands at 366, which is pretty impressive. We’re currently underway to another site on the margin of Tessler Bank which our (mostly) trusty Russian chart indicates we’ll find another valley-like feature, and once again we’ll do a camera trawl before targeting specific locations for sampling.
