Happy New Year everyone! Best wishes to you all for 2010 from all of us here on the Aurora Australis. We had a quiet night onboard, in transit to our next sampling area. We encountered a few icy “speed bumps” last night, with thick pack ice slowing our progress. We’re now in the open water area bounded by pack ice to our north, and the Shackleton Ice Shelf to our south, tracking over a shallow area known as the Tessler Bank. We’re heading to an area on the charts where the bathymetry indicates a “valley” which may harbour the kind of habitat variations that our marine scientists seek. We’ll be on site in the next few hours, and plan on running a bathymetric profile before lowering the beam trawl with cameras. This will be followed by a biological sampling run later today.

Regards, Doug, Aaron & Margaret
