WHOI #3 completed at 1700 yesterday. Transit to WHOI #4 was encouragingly straightforward, with the mooring deployed in a large “puddle”, finishing up at 0320 this morning. As we headed south to mooring #5 site, we encountered very heavy ice, which has deflected us off our 113.3E line towards the southwest, in search of easier ice. We’ve currently encountered heavy ice yet again, and are making slow progress. Current intentions are to find a suitable depth along our track and deploy the mooring slightly further west of the planned spot. It is, otherwise, a glorious day; undoubtedly the best of the trip so far. Most people are outside enjoying the sunshine and our passage through the ice. It’s so nice outside, in fact, that a sizeable chunk of the ship’s complement turned out on the open deck above the bridge in beanie, bikini, board shorts and boots for a group photo. One for the album… Regards, Doug, Aaron & Margaret
