Into the Ice! Huzzah! Everybody up on deck this morning as we encountered the ice edge at 63 55.8S, 113 18.3E, Weddell seals, Antarctic Petrels, Southern Fulmars, and Snow Petrels too. We’re currently on site at WHOI #3 mooring, deploying anchor first in the small area of open water behind the ship. This is not as easy as it may sound, and progress has been a bit slower than anticipated. WHOI #2 mooring was completed at 0315 HRS this morning, and “Team America” grabbed a few hours sleep before getting into our current deployment at 1100 HRS. All involved in the deployments are working hard on the trawl deck to get the job done, and there’s usually quite a few interested people following events from the comfort of the Recreation Room viewing deck. Ice conditions here near the ice edge are encouraging, and some recent satellite pictures have given us reason to be optimistic about following this line in to WHOI #5 at 65.22S. Regards, Doug, Aaron & Margaret
