Two more RMTs out of the way in the last 24 hours, and things are looking good for the next one this evening at 2000 hours. The uncomfortable swell we endured yesterday (not big, mind you, just… uncomfortable) has abated and become more regular. A fantastic bird accompaniment today, probably because they saw a net going in the water. A few large albatross came in very close to the trawl deck to see what was going on. No fish for them, unfortunately, but a big catch of salps and other gooey gelatinous looking things, as well as much more microscopic foraminifera, and some macroscopic pteropods, which are just the thing our ACE CRC group are after. These small zooplankton have shells made of calcium carbonate, and the researchers are studying the effects of increased levels of CO2 in the ocean, which increases the water’s acidity, and what the effect of this will be on these creatures ability to make and maintain their calcareous shell. Regards, Doug, Aaron & Margaret
