Cargo operations were completed yesterday at 1427hrs with all RTA cargo on board. The sounding of the ship's horn signaled our departure from Davis, leaving the summer and winter crews to settle in to their new home and their work programs ahead. It was a timely departure, as within half an hour of pulling up anchor, the wind picked up, falling snow reduced visibility, and we headed into 45 knots as we crossed the open water polynya. Over the 5.5 days of resupply (that included one day of bad weather) we delivered 698,750 L fuel and approximately 200 000 L of water to station, discharged 558.893 tonne of cargo, and loaded 143.524 tonne of RTA (cargo to return to Australia). A fantastic effort by all involved. It is a much quieter ship now with only 33 expeditioners on board compared to 89 on the way down. The winterers are enjoying what remains of the fresh fruit and salads, and the cooks and stewards treated us to sushi lunch yesterday. The first of our 6 x 1 hr clock changes occurred last night making our voyage home seem quicker already! The sun came out for our safety drill (muster) on the heli-deck this morning. Tonight we will make the most of the stable conditions in the ice and will have our last special occasion BBQ for the voyage.
Regards,
Karin, Sharon & Adam
