A brilliant blue sky yesterday saw us kick into action with preparations to retrieve the fuel line. The device used to clear the line of fuel is called a 'pig' and the action is known as 'pigging' the line. The pig is launched and then followed along through the fuel line. Sometimes it can get stuck along its path, and it can be a challenge to find the pig.
However, we were most fortunate that it arrived in one piece and cleared the fuel line in a timely manner. Routine cargo operations continued, although an Emperor penguin stole the show when it wandered inquisitively into the cargo area. There are no Emperor penguin colonies in the Davis area so its visit sparked much interest and numerous photographs by expeditioners. With refueling completed, pumping of water started yesterday evening. Today we delve into the ship's second Lower Hold unloading cargo. We will also receive a helicopter on deck for removal of the aerial survey camera equipment after the last survey flight is completed on station this morning.
It is all go down here! with planes, cranes and automobiles in the great Riviera of the South.
Regards, Karin, Sharon & Adam
