Comments

The weather this morning is not particularly inviting when it comes to flying, but the sun is trying to burn through the low level cloud and fog so today may provide an opportunity for some aircraft operations - positive reinforcement has been the name of the game for the past three days. Yesterday the weather within about 15nm of the ship was sensational for most of the day, it was the remaining 25nm between us and Syowa which was the issue. Continual snow prevented any helicopter operations taking place. Personnel at both the ship and the shore were ready to take advantage of any break in the weather. Alas the weather at the Syowa end continued to deteriorate and with the snow reaching the ship at about 1800 stumps were pulled. During the night the ship closed the distance to Syowa, as the prevailing southerly winds continued to push the pack ice to seaward. We now find ourselves on the fast ice edge, a little over 39nm to Syowa. From our estimations we believe that all we need is a ten hour window of good flying conditions to wrap this up, hopefully today provides that opportunity. All aboard and ashore doing well despite the torture of pent-up anticipation. Regards, Rob, Aaron and Mick
