Comments

Australia Day dawns much like the last two days weather wise, the winds are being kinder to us, but the snow is still present although lighter. We are currently remaining just inside the ice pack to avoid the larger swells of the open ocean, but avoiding going any deeper due to the risks posed by the predicted freshening Northerly winds which have the potential to compact the pack ice and cause us some difficulty. Last week the area we are currently in, was pretty much solid ice, three days ago it was very open pack, today it's like the jigsaw pieces are coming back together! Yesterday the pack ice stopped us doing a CTD cast in the required location. It was decided to abandon this site and attempt to conduct it when our work at Syowa is complete and conditions improve. The weekly emergency muster was conducted in the morning, with expeditioners being ticked-off in the Restaurant due to the helideck being buffeted by blowing wind and snow. With only 17 people to account for it was a pretty short event. Australia Day promises to be a light day work wise, but our hopes of enjoying the sunshine with a BBQ on the helideck are all but dashed due to the weather. In true Aussie fashion we will rise above adversity and celebrate none the less! All aboard and ashore are up to the challenge of Australia Day in Antarctica. Regards, Rob, Aaron and Mick
