Comments

A bit of cloud around this morning but the base is around the 5000ft mark so flying in the vicinity of the ship should be a goer, fingers crossed. The sun is breaking through and there are patches of blue sky around as well. Yesterday my pessimism was unfounded as conditions improved dramatically and flying operations commenced on time with the first helicopter on deck at 0834 and the last was bid sayonara at 1720. 18 flights were conducted during the day, which cleared out all the JARE cargo - all 90.5t of it plus another 7t of passenger flights. All up 97.5ish tonnes shipped ashore in about 5 days of actual operations. A tremendous effort by all involved to get us to this point. A big thanks to AA Crew, Cargo team, Pilots, Helicopter Engineers, AGSOs and the people on the deck at Syowa for making this happen. Back loading has already commenced with three flights of RTJ all ready conducted as part of yesterday's proceedings and with over 13t to bring back to the ship the work continues today. We expected to a good deal of this done by mid-afternoon with the rest of it to be completed after we return from our marine science activities. On the wildlife front, nothing much to report just the growing crowd of Adelies watching us go about our business. Still waiting for the Alpha predators to turn up! All aboard and ashore doing well and pretty happy with getting all the JARE cargo ashore. Regards, Rob, Aaron and Mick
