Comments

This morning the sun is out, but there is still a bit of cloud around with a potential to impact operations later today. Yesterday the weather improved significantly over the course of the morning and the pilots ashore took a test flight around lunchtime and deemed it flyable. The operation swung into top gear and the ship was ready to receive helicopters by 1300. The first helicopter landed at 1314 and we said goodbye to the last one at 2113. All in all 20 flights were conducted and over 17t of cargo was sent ashore in a good nine hours of operations. Today will see us complete the inwards cargo and start bring out some of the "RTJ". Once today is out of the way, we will move out to the ice edge and conduct some more marine science before returning to the fast ice to recover the JARE 49 Winter and JARE 50 Summer personnel. Still only the one reported sighting of Orcas despite vigilant watch being kept, the consolation prize was the sight of a Minke whale cruising past last night as we were conducting helicopter operations. There are a number of seals taking advantage of the light winds and sunshine to work on their sun tans, by doing a lot of lying around on the ice around the ship. All the best to our colleagues on the AMDERMA (V4) as they make their way to Casey. Enjoy the ride! All aboard and ashore doing well and highly satisfied with our efforts so far. Regards, Rob, Aaron and Mick
