This morning the sun stopped shining on us as a cloud bank moved over and we now find ourselves with only a small chance of flying today. Yesterday the first helicopter hit the deck at 0831 and the last left about 1745. During the intervening time 23 flights to Syowa were undertaken, with around 19 sent ashore. We have two of the aircraft sling loading cargo, instead of internally loading, which allows to fully utilise the cargo capacity of the helicopters. Sitting hard up in the fast ice yesterday, the Aurora became a big wildlife magnet with some whales spotted close to the ship as well as a raft of Adelie's penguins. At one stage we had about 100 penguins checking the ship out. A couple of Giant Petrels took a load of and decided to have a sleep on the ice within a couple of hundred metres of the ship as did another juvenile Emperor. All aboard and ashore doing well. Regards, Rob, Aaron and Mick
