Another sensational day dawning in Antarctica, with the sun shining, light winds and a moderately cool -6.3C. We have another big day of cargo operations planned today and hopefully will break the back of the inwards cargo. Yesterday the first helicopter hit the deck at 0828 and the last left about 1845. The ship managed to close the distance to Syowa to around 43nm, which has reduced the transit times for the helicopters and increased the amount of flights available for cargo during the working day. We are now firmly parked up in the fast ice. All up 25 flights to Syowa with approximately 20t of cargo were conducted. We are approaching the halfway mark and should, all going well, ship another 20t today, leaving about 20t to go tomorrow. The weather forecast (thanks Davis Met and the Meteorologists aboard) looks good for at least the next two days. We also had the opportunity to send some more of the support team ashore to have a look around Syowa and help out with operations shore side. The wildlife is taking an interest in the Aurora, which a large number of Adelie penguins frequently coming close to the ship whilst we are hard up in the fast ice. We also had a visit from a solitary juvenile Emperor penguin yesterday. All aboard enjoying the weather and the hard work. Regards, Rob, Aaron and Mick
