The dream run continues with unusually calm seas for the last 24 hours, making it possible for the helideck spa to be flashed up and given a full power trial by a small number of hardy expeditioners. There were a large number of whale sightings yesterday, including Minkes and Humpbacks. The conch shell was sounded again on the upper deck, but generated no results, in fact I think it might have scared the wildlife away! Marine science continues at a hectic pace with XBTs, XCDT and surface sampling being conducted up until midnight every night. More probes are shot of this ship than a destroyer! The Antarctic Petrels are accompanying us at the moment, enjoying the air stream around the ship. We also have a number of Sooty Albatrosses that visit and hover outside the bridge wing doors eyeballing us. Over the last couple of days the JARE expeditioners have commenced the last of their field training in preparation for our arrival at Syowa Station. Helicopter safety briefings will commence today and continue for the next two days. Another hour in the rack was gained this morning as clocks were wound back one hour. The ship is now on UTC+5, which is six hours behind Hobart time (UTC+11). All aboard doing well and eagerly awaiting our arrival at the fly-off point. Regards, Rob, Aaron and Mick
