The fog that has been accompanying us for the past three days, finally lifted yesterday afternoon. Although it was still overcast the views were spectacular with a multitude of bergs of all sizes passing us by, making ita good day for the photographers aboard. Yesterday afternoon, one of the expeditioners brought a big counch shell up onto the starboard bridge wing and blew into and made a bit of a ruckus. By magic, this seemed to attract a pod of pilot whales which was passing by. As if drawn to the call, they appeared to turn towards the ship, or maybe it was just a lucky coincidence. They disappeared pretty quickly, probably after realising it wasn't the Jessica Alba or George Clooney of the whale world calling, but just a big orange blob with a bad case of wind! We wound our clocks back last night and now the ship is on UTC +6, which is five hours behind Hobart time (UTC+11). This morning at about 0500, eagle-eyed Wendy (4-8 Watch), one of the Integrated Ratings (IR) aboard spotted the bow of a vessel sticking out from behind an iceberg. The ship closed to investigate. We made contact via radio, exchanged pleasantries, took some photos and continued on our separate ways. The other highlight of the morning, besides breakfast of course, was the continuing passing berg parade. The added bonus this morning was the close encounter with a spectacular jade iceberg. More than a few camera motors were burnt out getting shots of that one. As per normal, all aboard enjoying the calm before the storm, which will be the Syowa resupply. Regards, Rob, Aaron and Mick
