In the process of recovering the Conductivity Temperature Depth (CTD) rosette at Station 6 on longitude 110 East. CTDs are now complete for the southbound leg other activities, including the continuous plankton recorder (CPR), XCTDs and surface sampling will continue as long as ice conditions allow. Yesterday afternoon, Kenji-san (JARE Logistics) presented a very informative lecture on Syowa station along with a video on the history of the Japanese Antarctic Research Expeditions. The AA School of Japanese Culture lecture was on the subject of Sports Engineering. The management team also met on the bridge to discuss the ice conditions expected to be encountered in the vicinity of Syowa. Capt Shigehara-san is aboard and has 30-years experience of navigating in the ice around Syowa, which will prove valuable over the coming week as we move westward. As the ice navigation meeting was being held the first "official" visual sighting of an iceberg was made. With a decent size berg breaking through the fog at about 1610 at position 56 54S 109 56E. The bridge filled quickly and the servo motors in cameras got a pounding. All aboard enjoying the sensational conditions today, with the Sun finely shinning. Regards, Rob, Aaron and Mick
