In the process of recovering the Conductivity Temperature Depth (CTD) rosette at Station 5 on longitude 110 East. 5 down 1 to go! Great effort by the overnight AA watch keepers to get us to Station 5 right on time. Yesterday's AA School of Japanese Culture lecture series included presentations on Japanese mobile phone culture and a session on a movie telling the story of two famous surveyors' ascent of a mountain in 1896. The presenter had only recently undertaken the same climb. Some very spectacular photo's were shown of this truly beautiful part of Japan. One interesting fact from the mobile phone presentation was that the most text messages sent by the one person on the one day in Japan is 2000. That's one message every 36 seconds - person must have thumbs of steel! Snow was falling the morning for the first time during this passage, means that the first iceberg shouldn't be far away. Thoughts are starting to turn to the logistical side of the voyage, with preliminary planning beginning as well training and equipment checks. Last of the CTDs on the southbound leg will be conducted tomorrow morning and then we commence a more westerly course for Syowa. All aboard enjoying the calmer conditions today, with the fog starting to lift as well. Cameras are loaded and ready.... Regards, Rob, Aaron and Mick
