Happy New Year (kingashin'nen) from all aboard the Aurora Australis. 2009 was welcomed in with a traditional Japanese ceremony, which involved the ringing of the ship's bell over 100 times. A short interlude at about the 50 ring mark allowed the bagpipes to be flashed up for a bit of Scottish tradition. A truly multicultural New Year on the high seas! Calm seas, no wind and cool weather have allowed us to crack on with our marine science program. We have deployed two Argo floats at latitudes 36 & 38 South and are currently undertaking our first CTD cast. Ship's clocks were reverted 1 hour last night and we are now on GMT +8 (3 hours behind Hobart). By the time we reach Syowa we will be on GMT +3 (8 hours behind Hobart). All aboard have settled into the shipboard life remarkably quickly, mainly due to the good weather and equally good company. Regards, Rob, Aaron and Mick
