After an extremely busy four-day port call the Aurora Australis left Fremantle at 1630. Embarked aboard are the members of the 50th Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (JARE) who are on their way to Syowa Station. The voyage is led and supported by an Australian team of about 28 personnel and the crew of the Aurora. The Japanese Consul-General Torao Sato visited the ship and, with a host of others, waved us off. Most people were glad to be leaving Fremantle's 38 degree heat for the relatively cooler climate offshore. We are currently steaming south west to get in position to commence an extensive program of marine science focused on climate change. Argo float deployment is due to occur this afternoon as the ship reaches 36 South. Thanks goes out to Simon, Nicki and the crew of the Aurora for making the port call run like a dream, despite the heat and other challenges. Regards, Rob, Aaron and Mick
