Comments

The skies cleared yesterday afternoon and we were able to send two helicopters ashore to Davis with the medical team, mail and some fresh fruit and vegetables. The aircraft stayed ashore overnight, while the ship continued to the fast ice edge. We had a spectacular sunset last night, cruising through the newly formed sea ice past towering icebergs. There was hardly a breath of wind and the bergs appeared to float above the horizon. It was the Antarctica that’s been obscured by cloud for the last two weeks and its unveiling brought a smile to everyone’s face. After dinner last night all the expeditioners formed a chain gang from the tween deck, through the galley and restaurant, along the starboard companionway and up two flights of stairs into the heli hangar. We moved the first 2,500 kg of cargo into the hangar in preparation for today’s heli ops, which are now underway transferring people and essential cargo ashore. The ice radar team are working on the fast ice adjacent to the ship, conducting their long-awaited science experiments. Overall, it’s been a successful 24 hours. The ship is now on Davis time (4 hours behind Hobart).
