Our progress towards Davis has been very stop and go. The patches of heavy ice are slow going, but then we find good leads to follow before another patch of heavy ice pulls us up again. Some of the floes have been vast, stretching from horizon to horizon, and a couple of times we’ve had to back-track to find another way. The overcast conditions have been persistent, with poor horizon definition. Overnight we had more snow, and the team were out early this morning clearing the heli deck in anticipation of aircraft ops. However, despite Davis reporting clear blue skies today, conditions at the ship have been unsuitable for flying. We remain hopeful that we weather will clear this afternoon. Everyone onboard is well and in good spirits. Christmas carol rehearsals are underway, and the galley report we’ve eaten 200 litres of ice cream since leaving Hobart - which may explain various reports that the ship’s scales “can’t possibly be right”. Seal and penguin sightings are still popular!
