We have made excellent progress in the last 24 hours. Yesterday afternoon we still had some thick ice to contend with, but overnight and today we’ve been in more open pack ice with good leads. Hooray! We are now less than 300 nautical miles from Davis but unfortunately the weather conditions are not suitable for long-range flying. We currently have low cloud with snow showers forecast for this afternoon, but we are keeping a constant eye on the weather and will get the medical team and supplies ashore at the first possibly opportunity. Meanwhile we will continue steaming towards Davis and expect to make good ground over the next 24 hours so that we are much closer to the station. Thankfully we have favourable southerly winds that will help to open new leads in the ice. There are not many icebergs in this area but there have been steady sightings of Adelie and Emperor Penguins, Crabeater Seals and the occasional whale. Everyone onboard is well and looking forward to helping with Davis fly-off operations. Regards Tony and John
