Ice conditions slowed our progress last night as we attempted to push SW to a flyoff point north of Mirny. Coupled with a deterioration in the weather forecast for tomorrow, we have had to abandon plans to fly a medical team from the ship to Davis. This was a very difficult decision, given the importance of getting support to Davis station, but the ice and weather conditions continue to thwart our efforts. We are now making good progress towards Davis on two engines. This morning we conducted a stretcher exercise with the medical team onboard to practice moving a stretcher and patient out of the helicopter and into the ship’s medical facility. This went extremely well and was a valuable learning exercise for everyone involved. Icebergs appeared in good supply yesterday afternoon and evening, with one stretching more than 10km, disappearing into the gloom of the horizon in both directions. We also had dozens of Antarctic petrels following the ship last night, which was quite a sight, plus there were more penguin and seal sightings than on other recent days. Everyone onboard is well and finding great ways of keeping themselves entertained.
