The winds turned northerly late yesterday and pushed us along at 12 knots for a while, but overnight they have swung to the SW and strengthened to 40+ knots and we are once again pushing into a head sea. The air temperature has dipped below zero and it is starting to feel like Antarctica isn’t too far away. A number of people have given interesting talks about Antarctic science programs and field activities this season, plus there have been ongoing field training and planning meetings for Casey operations. The Continuous Plankton Recorder is still deployed and yesterday we pumped 800 litres of water onboard for one of the science programs, which is conducting genome sequencing of the micro-organisms in the water. Regards Tony and John.
