Comments

We completed another four CTD stations and a 1000 m deep cast with the trace metal rosette in the last 24 hours. At the next site we will again collect deep samples for trace metal analyses. The two CTD casts plus trace metal rosette and FRRF will require about 10 hours on site. We deployed a set of expendable temperature probes (XBTs) at the last station, as part of an effort to carefully calibrate these simple but useful instruments. Much of our knowledge of how ocean temperatures have changed in recent decades is built on XBT measurements; calibration tests in cold water are needed to allow accurate estimates of how the ocean is changing. The weather continues to work in our favour, although the forecast sounds like the weather more typical of this part of the world may catch up to us in a day or two. Cheers, Steve and Deepy.
