Comments

We made good progress through the sea ice to the continental shelf yesterday afternoon. We were lucky enough to find a nice billabong of open water near the site of the first CTD station on the transect, but the wind was too strong to allow us to complete the station work. By first light, the wind had dropped slightly and we were able to successfully complete a CTD, a deployment of the “Fast Repetition Rate Fluorometer” (FRRF) and the NIWA trace metal rosette. With air temperatures of -8C and 40 knots of wind, the sea ice is forming rapidly and all on board are a little relieved to have the work underway and the ship pointed toward Hobart. We’ve completed a second CTD station in the lee of a spectacular iceberg on the edge of the continental shelf and are presently seeking a gap in the ice to carry out the next station. Cheers, Steve and Deepy
