Comments

We departed Casey yesterday at around 1:30 in the afternoon. Those who joined at Casey completed their safety inductions and muster drill before heading off for some well earned rest. The wind had blown a fair bit of ice into the harbour so the views on the way out were quite spectacular. We were treated to close up views of large cathedral and tabular icebergs. Many people have commented on the abundance of bird life that they spotted as we headed out. Until darkness fell the bridge was full of people watching wildlife and the different shapes of ice. This morning we are clear of the ice edge, and will continue to travel west to Davis in this open water so that we can move a little more quickly. We receive daily updates of satellite ice imagery which enables the bridge crew to find the safest and most effective route for the vessel. An unfortunate side effect of this efficiency is that we have lost our wonderful views of sea ice and will just have to hold out for those icebergs. It's been great to add some new faces who have interesting stories to tell of the winter or summer that they have just spent in Antarctica, however the longer meal queues and wait for clothes dryers is a taste of what's to come when we collect 39 people from Davis and effectively double our population. Cheers, Nicki, Rob and Peter.
