We departed Ice Station 14 on schedule at 13:00 yesterday, but more bad weather thwarted our attempts to trawl in the afternoon and evening. The wind increased to more than 50 knots by late evening, with blowing snow reducing visibility to near zero. We steamed north overnight, but encountered a significant swell penetrating well into the pack ice, so retreated 20 miles to the south again, before heading east. We are currently about 30 miles south of the ice edge, heading due east. The wind has eased considerably but a 1 m swell is still rolling through the ice. We are all busy cleaning up and packing equipment in preparation for heading back into open sea. Regards, Tony, Dave and Petra.
