Ice station! The pack gradually increased in concentration as we headed further south overnight and around breakfast time we found a floe that Tony judged suitable for our first ice station. Once the crew had chipped the ice off the long walkway used to access the floe from the ship Andy, our field training officer, was first onto the floe to test its strength. As I type there is a frenzy of activity out on the ice. The 200 metre transect has been marked out and measurements are being taken along it, the oceanographers have set up their current profiler through a hole they drilled into the ice and the iron sampling team can be seen of in the distance in their distinctive white clean suits. A party of ice corers are working in the middle distance and a hole has been prepared to insert the Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). The technical support guys spend their time moving from one group to the next solving problems and one of the helicopters has been pushed out onto the deck to check out its instrumentation. Last nights BBQ on the trawl deck was a great success with a spectacular sunset and occasional penguins to be seen. Regards, Tony, Dave and Petra
