We reached the ice edge about 04:00 local time this morning and have been passing through bands of pancake ice all day. The strong SW winds over the past few days have pushed the ice out about 1 degree of latitude further north than was shown on the satellite images a few days ago. We conducted the first RMT and ring net at 03:00 this morning, catching a few of the krill usually found just north of the ice edge. The second RMT and ring net were conducted at 10:00. It has been a bright, clear sunny day that has brightened everyone's spirits. There has been *a lot* of photography today. The first iceberg was sighted at 9am, with a few smaller bergy bits since then. The scientists have been busily unpacking all day and the tween deck is now a hive of activity. A BBQ on the trawl deck is planned for this evening. Regards, Tony, Dave and Petra
