Comments

We arrived at Ice Station 5, in the fast ice at the southern end of our first transect, this morning. It is a spectacular location, surrounded by icebergs. The weather has been mostly fine, although cold and windy. Helicopter operations are currently underway to fly our instruments over the (now deformed) drifting buoy array and to deploy an ARGO float, and last nights RMT and SUIT trawls were successful in catching about 1000 krill. Most of the scientific parties are currently out on the ice. Today we have witnessed a spectacular sunrise, a pod of killer whiles swimming across our bow, grounded icebergs galore, and new pancake ice forming before our very eyes in the cold, windy conditions of the flaw lead. Regards, Tony, Dave and Petra.
