Whalearama!!! That's the only way to describe yesterday. For about 4nm we steamed along surrounded by Humpback whales and others we thought to be Fin whales. It was fantastic in bright sunshine, blue skies and white icebergs to see the constant blows of spray as the whales exhaled on the surface. At least one Humpback put on a great display, leaping out of the water and crashing back down on the surface repeatedly. This breaching is amazing to watch and to think that 30 odd tons of animal is being propelled at least 2/3 the way out of the water is pretty impressive. Eventually we left these whales behind and steamed through some light pack ice with the submerged sections of the floes clearly visible and brilliantly turquoise below the surface. In the afternoon another whale display took place with yet more aerial action! Also in the afternoon we found ourselves surrounded by birds with Light Mantled Sooty Albatross, Fulmars, Prions, Cape Petrels, Antarctic Petrels and Wilson's Storm Petrels all circling the ship. This morning we are still making good progress though it is a grey day with light snowfall. The decks and cargo are covered in a thin layer of snow and compared to yesterday the environment has a wholly more Antarctic feel. Big bergs continue to loom out of the low cloud to provide great viewing as we continue on our way to Casey. Yours Aye Robb and Simon
