The last 24 hrs has seen us move through relatively light pack ice towards Zongshan. Guided by ice imagery we receive from Polarview we made a course to find open water to speed us on our way to Zongshan. Great wildlife was seen all day both on the ice and in the water passing the ship. Adelie and Emperor penguins gathered in huddles on floes, crab eater seals watched as we glided past, Antarctic Petrels flocked around the bow, 4 Minke Whales sped past seemingly intent on being somewhere else while snow petrels came and went in small flocks. Yesterday the helicopters and a team to depot fuel deployed to Law Base to await our arrival off Zongshan, while we also spoke with our Chinese friends at Zongshan to coordinate the delivery and retrieval of their expeditioners. This morning we woke to a flat calm Prydz Bay with only a few bergs dotted about. We steamed towards Zongshan at 13knots in great conditions. As is the way with Antarctic operations the crew at Law Base rang us at about 7am to tell us the weather there was not suitable for flying. So we made a Naval destroyer like turn to alter course for Davis and changed our plans to commence operations there at lunchtime today. Just after altering course we passed a large pod of killer whales which distracted us from our breakfast! We are now some 20 odd miles from Davis and looking forward to arriving in the next few hours to start operations. Yours Aye Robb and Simon
