Comments

The last day of summer was a fantastic one for us with continued sunshine and calm seas all day. Dr Luigi ran some more medical training for us with a few volunteers being trussed up in various stretchers as part of the session. In the evening we had a pod of over 100 Pilot Whales cruise past us heading north with attendant dolphins in amongst the larger snub nosed black whales. Later in the evening, when most slept, the crew on watch observed a series of displays of the Aurora Australis (the atmospheric, not the seagoing type) in clear night skies above and in front of the ship. Today is more lumpy again with both wind and swell combining to have the ship moving in varying attitudes as we continue to plug South West. John and the crew retrieved the second CPR yesterday and now has the third tow in the water. It must be only a few days before we sight the first ice bergs and we steam through the dark hours of night with a huge spotlight shining out from the bow to help see anything in the water ahead. Needless to say we are starting to watch the weather forecasts and ice conditions around Davis, Zongshan and Mawson with growing interest. Yours Aye Robb and Simon
