A tad more bumpy now however still nice conditions on the Southern Ocean. A few Wandering Albatross and White Chinned Petrels sighted around the ship. As part of the Southern Ocean - Continuous Plankton Recorder program, zooplankton samples have been intensively collected on most Aurora Australis voyages to the continent and back over the last 10 seasons or so, including this one. By using a continuous plankton recorder (CPR) near-to-surface- dwelling zooplankton can be collected at normal ship speed during the voyage. The unit is towed about 100 metres astern of the ship for approximately 450 nautical miles for each sample. Yesterday afternoon John, with the help of the Aurora crew, deployed a CPR trial run and will redeploy the unit this afternoon to start collecting zooplankton. Ships clock back 1 hour tonight.
